Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer es el relato de unos meses en la vida de este niño que vive en una ciudad pequeña del suroeste de Estados Unidos a orillas del río Misisipi. Criado por su tía Polly, que lo quiere de corazón pero que lo somete a una disciplina que se le hace absurda y desagradable, Tom contempla el mundo de una manera muy distinta a como lo hacen los adultos con los que tiene que convivir. Precisamente porque existe ese distanciamiento nos entretiene con sus reacciones divertidas y nobles. Más agreste y rebelde contra ese universo de las personas mayores es su amigo Huckleberry Finn, el compañero ideal de Tom que es envidiado por los demás niños que contemplan en su vida una forma de existencia que a ellos les gustaría llevar. Juntos vivirán aventuras humorísticas y dramáticas de las que podrán salir más airosos de lo que hubiera podido hacerlo cualquier adulto. Al final -siquiera en apariencia- tanto Tom como Huck acabarán siendo conducidos a ese contexto de personas que crecerán y dejarán de ser niños.

Argumento y resumen de la trama La obra nos cuenta la historia de Thomas Sawyer, un chico huérfano que vive al cuidado de su tía Polly en St. Petersburg, un apacible pueblecito a orillas del río Misisipi, en los Estados Unidos. Lleva una vida más o menos tranquila en medio de colosales travesuras, siendo constantemente víctima de algunos abusos por parte de su hermanastro Sid, que lo culpa a veces de sus acciones. Pero el chico es muy astuto y sagaz, y siempre se las arregla para salir de cualquier apuro.

Un día, Tom ve por primera vez a la hija del nuevo juez del Condado: Rebecca Thatcher (Becky), y se enamora perdidamente de ella. Después de pensarlo, hace amistad con ella y le declara su amor. Becky también se siente atraída por él, pero cuando se hacen novios oficialmente, Tom comete el error de mencionar a la que era antes su novia (Amy Lawrence), provocando el enfado de Becky y que los dos estén distanciados.

Tom es invitado por Huck Finn al cementerio a medianoche para probar un método para quitar las verrugas. Una semana después de que Tom y ella vuelvan al pueblo, Tom se entera de que el juez Thatcher había mandado cerrar la caverna con una puerta de hierro, y Tom, desesperado, cuenta que el indio Joe estaba dentro de la caverna.

Todos acuden ahí, y lo encuentran muerto junto a la reja. Había estado oradar la puerta con su cuchillo, no para salir de ahí, sino para no sentir pasar el tiempo y no desesperarse. Se había comido las velas que dejaban los turistas en la cueva. Finalmente, había muerto de hambre y desesperación ya no quedaban mas murciélagos machos.

El lugar donde murió el indio Joe se convierte en una atracción turística, y después del entierro, Tom le habla a Huckleberry Finn del tesoro del indio, diciendo que pensaba que estaba escondido dentro de la caverna. Los dos van río abajo a la cueva, entran por un atajo que Tom conocía, y descubren una cruz pintada en una roca. Because it is now treated as a hero among the boys, Tom decides to despise Becky Thatcher as she did with him, and then begins to get jealous of his ex-girlfriend Amy Lawrence.
